Each job is different, and Book Doctor’s fees are influenced by factors such as what needs to be done with the text, the deadline, the subject, format, and publishing sector.
I understand that there are few things more annoying than vague “it depends” quotes, so here are some examples of fees I have charged for recent projects:
- full read-through of a 100,000-word fiction manuscript, plus suggestions for a plot rework (1 month turnover): £600
- full copy-edit of a 105,000-word fiction manuscript (6 weeks): £800
- proofread of a 60,000-word novella (1 month): £500
- advice/consultancy on pitching a project to literary agents (2-page document): £300
These fees represent my experience as an editor, and are broadly in line with Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) guidelines:
